Welcome to the ‘Fast 50’ list

A list of ‘Fast 50’ companies was released recently by a panel of editors and writers by Fast Company, a monthly business magazine that reports on innovation, digital media, technology, change management, leadership, design and social responsibility. The main selection criteria - innovative. Being Malaysian, I am proud to notice that one Malaysian company had made it to this list. Bravo! Make a wild guess before you check out which Malaysian company had made the nation proud.

The World’s Most Innovative Companies - the ‘Fast 50’»

From the list, the country that tops it is US with more than 70% of the companies originated from that land. No wonder so many aspiring jobseekers prefer to work with multinational companies (MNCs) especially originated from US. Can a local company have what it takes to be a “fast company” too?

The following is our list of nine indicators of working in a fast company.

  1. Maintain the feel of working in a small company.
  2. Not much of corporate hierarchy.
  3. Everyone is expected to wear several hats, i.e., take up different roles.
  4. Non-discriminatory hiring policy and favors ability over experience. So, don’t be surprised that your manager is much younger than you.
  5. The staffs share an obsessive commitment to perfection and having a great time doing what they do.
  6. Everyone is equally important and part of the organization’s success.
  7. Place strong emphasis on innovation and commitment to cost containment.
  8. Must have a café and get everyone to eat and hang out in the café.
  9. Staffs are to have open conversation with other departmental colleagues during lunch and tea breaks. Staying in your own cliques is banned.

Does your company have all of the above? You are welcome to disagree with me and come out with your own list. But I don’t think I can be very wrong since the above represents the culture of the company that is in the current No. 1 spot of this ‘Fast 50’ list.

Wish to join one of these companies? At the time of writing, two of the companies from the list have active job vacancies in Allyhunt. Perhaps you would like to check out Tesco and Samsung now.

But, being a true and optimistic Malaysian, I like to believe that any local Malaysian companies can be like AirAsia to be placed in the same platform as some of the most recognized companies in the world. The difference about AirAsia in the words of Fast Company editors was “innovative down to its corporate bones”. Lets hope for more Malaysian companies to make it to the list in the years to come. Malaysia boleh!
