At some point of our lives, we dreamt of careers that we would never pursue but for the fun of it, we imagined ourselves in those positions. Most often, this happened after we were inspired by someone successful. I can bet that many youngsters are already imagining themselves being an astronaut after witnessing the success of Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor. Bravo to our “Malaysia Angkasawan”! We need more people like that to inspire us to achieve the impossible.

Being an astronaut is considered a career that you can only dream of but would never had the capabilities or guts to pursue. We convinced ourselves that the stakes are against us after considering the number of astronauts that can be counted in this world. Perhaps, a career as an Astronaut is a bit too far fetched. Yet, there are still many other careers that ordinary people had never thought of but they are nevertheless careers that are worth considering. What about being a Veterinarian, Zoo Keeper, Horticulturist, Stand up Comedian or even a Pastor/Religious Teacher? The problem with most of us is that we only discovered our strengths/talents or what we want much later in life. We were not taught in school in regards to choosing our career and even if we were educated then, we would not have the faintest idea of what was delivered to us. As we grow up, we are pretty much influenced by our parents, uncles, aunties and neighbours. Most often than not, they would advise us to pursue a career that promised good money and prospects. Nothing wrong with that but why should we limit ourselves to the “road often traveled” type of careers?

So, is it too late if you discovered that you wanted to do something new now after spending the first half of your life on something else? If you have three kids to feed and aging parents to take care of, perhaps it’s best not to dwell on this issue at all. So, does that mean you are stuck in a place whereby you will never have the opportunity to realize your potential? It is a dilemma indeed. Many had found a solution though by making the most out of what they are doing now. At the end of the day, it is still very much a matter of perception. You can choose to love or hate your job! When you decide to love your job, you will find all the reasons to support the job you like and end up happy!
