Retirement - What next?

Grace The time has finally come for me to say farewell to the corporate world and join the rest of my friends in retirement. I would be able to do all the things I had no time to do when I was working full time. No more time-consuming and sometimes meaningless meetings, no more long reports to prepare and no more having to see what moods my superiors would be in. I breathed a sigh of relief.

Just the thought of being able to wake up late seemed inviting. Now I can have as many lunches, tea or dinners with friends and relatives. I could go shopping. I could visit my old aunt as often as I want. In addition, I could spend as much time as I like at the gym and meet up with the members for tea and a good gossip after our workout. I could join the church choir. All these seemed heavenly but did they? After a few months, boredom set in and there was a lack of purpose in my life. I needed to do something useful. My mind needed to be triggered so I won’t lose it. As they say, “use it or lose it”.

English has always been a fascinating language to me. After all, I grew up with it and it is the only language I can read and write well in. When I worked in the corporate world, I was always referred to as the “English teacher” as I was always correcting and editing reports and correspondences for my fellow colleagues. Perhaps I could further enhance my proficiency of the language and teach it. I did just that. Having taken and passed a 4 months’ course in teaching, I got a job as a fixed contract instructor with a reputable language school in Subang Jaya, where I lived. Teaching English to foreign students from all parts of the world is most challenging but rewarding. Many a time, what went on in the classrooms reminded me so much of the series “Mind Your Language” which I had watched years ago. Now as I reminisce, I can just imagine how Mr Brown felt and how confused his students were in trying to understand him and the language as a whole.

It has been more than 3 years since I started teaching English but I have not stopped learning. Everyday is a new experience and every student is different. One size certainly does not fit all and in teaching, you need different strokes for different folks.

In conclusion, there is certainly more to life than just leisure after retirement. You can even have a new lease of life and a new career. Life can be just as exciting and enriching if you are willing to make the best of the remaining years of your life!
