Fresh Grad: Please want me!

Thousands of young people graduated from universities and colleges every year. Everyone desires to have a job as soon as possible. However, there have been many reports in the media that graduates are facing difficulty in getting jobs. If you are one of them reading this and had been trying to figure out why you can’t seem to get on to the employment boat, perhaps the following may help you to be a smarter jobseeker.

Please want me!

• Most graduates give up before they even try. That’s equivalent to losing half of the battle. You may be told by your peers the difficulty of getting jobs but you don’t have to believe that you would share the same fate too. Have confidence in yourself is rule number one!

• Even though having a dream job is great but you need to be realistic as well. It’s a big mistake to think that the dream job will come your way if you wait patiently for it. A bigger mistake to think that your first job has to be your dream job. Most often than not, it does not happen that way. You have to start somewhere and gradually build yourself into having your dream job.

• Give yourself a time frame in getting a job. Have a plan or strategy like the way you crafted your study plan before your final examination. If your field is highly specialized, you may need to wait a bit longer but nevertheless, give yourself a time frame. If the job that you wanted does not seem to come to you, accept a job that has some relevance. For example, if you are trained to be a Biochemist and there was no such job opportunity, perhaps you can start with any lab related job or work in an industry-related company first.

• Prepare well before interviews. It means from the right attire to understanding of the company and the job that you will be interviewed for. Interviewers pay attention to all these details.

• Take interviews seriously. I cannot stress this enough because many graduates just blew away their chances at this stage. It is the most important one. Once you got a call for an interview, it is for you to prove to the interviewer that the time spent with you is worth every second of his/hers.

• Carry yourself well during the interview. You may not have the experience to back you up but show to the interviewer that you have what it takes for the job. The ability to communicate and interact are skills that will give you an edge. If you think you don’t have that yet, start acquiring them by practicing with your course mates or peers now. These skills come with practice. And confidence is not the same as arrogance. It is better to be polite and having good manners than being articulate but proud!

• If you are applying for a job in the private sector, a good command of English is a must. This reality hurts but do we have any other choice?

Employers are only interested in ensuring their decision to hire you is worth the investment. Prove to them that you are worth it!

Of course, it is easy said than done, but heeding a little advice may just land you a job!

No questions. But I gotta agree, fresh grads have to get out of the notion that the first job will be their dream job. First, you won’t really know till you really get into it. Second, sometimes your dreams change. Third, who are we kidding…we’re fresh…do we really know what we WANT?
